I have known David since meeting him during the 2004 NCTE meeting when he was recognized for one of many lifetime achievement awards and I was at that time a new graduate and a ‘promising researcher.’ Our paths would cross again several years later at a critical juncture in my journey. I will always remember him as a wise mentor, sage guide, and personal friend.
This picture from LRA 2014 with the Ken, Yetta Goodman, and George Lakoff serves as an iconic moment in my own academic journey. It was great to be a part of such a legendary group of senior scholars who modeled a unique combination of intellect, humility, and ethical commitments. I was grateful and humbled to be part of such a generative conversation. I am certain it wouldn’t have happened without David’s mentorship and friendship. Have a great retirement!
